Havan is the activity of every Hindu ritual carried out in Vedic format. Every offering made to the fire is considered as an offering to the gods. Havan is also called as Homa or Homam. In the Hindu scriptures, havan puja was performed by brahmins and rishis to incite gods and bring prosperity into the world. They are considered a part of sanskaras. Fire is the central element of the havan and the other elements are offered as the ritual progresses with recital of chanting. Water, earth, wind and soul are placed in the fire to invoke the hidden powers and divinities that are present in every Hindu’s life. Havan’s are done under open sky, inside temples or at home. It often begins with the kindling of fire in square Vat (K). Mango and sandalwood sticks are used that are dipped and dried in ghee. Coconut, saffron, rice grains, camphor and betel are offered into the havan kund along with Frankincensce (Dhoop). Havan basically is done before puja to purify the environment against germs because the ingredients used in the havan helps to do the same.
